Abstract

The "Barapen" stone cooking tradition is a significant ritual within the Dani tribe's culture in Papua (Wamena). However, with the growing spread of Christianity among the Dani people, questions arise regarding the influence of Christian teachings on the practice of the "Barapen" tradition. Therefore, this research aims to explore the extent to which Christian teachings have affected the execution of the "Barapen" stone cooking tradition among the Dani. This study employs a qualitative methodology with an ethnographic approach. Data were collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews with members of the Dani community in the mountainous region of Wamena, and literature analysis. Informants included members of the Dani tribe and pastors from the Wamena mountains who are involved in the implementation of the "Barapen" tradition. The findings of this research indicate that the influence of Christian teachings has led to changes in the practice of the "Barapen. " Traditional rituals, including animal sacrifices and stone arrangements, have been adapted to align with Christian principles. Elements such as Christian prayers and religious symbols have begun to permeate this ritual, reflecting an accommodation between traditional cultural practices and Christian teachings. Despite undergoing modifications, the "Barapen" tradition continues to preserve essential elements that represent the cultural identity of the Dani tribe. This study illustrates how the integration of Christian teachings into traditional practices can result in new forms of rituals that signify social and spiritual change. The impact of Christian teachings on the "Barapen" tradition exemplifies a complex cultural adjustment process, wherein traditional elements are maintained while simultaneously incorporating Christian values, highlighting the flexibility and adaptability of culture amid religious transformation.
