JOHN WESLEY SEBAGAI HOMO UNIUS LIBRI: FONDASI ALKITABIAH SPIRITUALITAS DAN TEOLOGI WESLEYAN

Ester Emita Tampubolon

Abstract

This article re-examines John Wesley’s theological identity as homo unius libri. It contends that this concept is central to understanding Wesleyan Methodist spirituality. While recent scholarship frequently emphasizes religious experience, the work of the Holy Spirit, and personal and social holiness, it often neglects the foundational role of Scripture in these areas. Consequently, Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience are sometimes regarded as equivalent sources for theology, which may result in a fragmented interpretation of Wesley’s thought. Employing a historical and theological methodology, this study investigates the significance of homo unius libri in Wesley’s life and writings, and reassesses the primary role of Scripture in relation to tradition, reason, and experience. The findings indicate that, for Wesley, religious experience and the pursuit of holiness do not constitute independent sources of authority. Instead, they represent faithful responses shaped, guided, and corrected by Scripture. By interpreting homo unius libri as an epistemological stance rather than merely a pious expression, this article seeks to address current debates in Wesleyan scholarship. It proposes a more integrated, Scripture-centered approach to Wesleyan spirituality. These insights have significant implications for Methodist church practice and theological education.
